There’s a definite ‘back to school’ feel at the moment, even for those of us well beyond school age! As you return from some relaxation over the summer, I hope, it’s time to think about our autumn programme of events.

The CIPR Corporate and Financial Group Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday 21 November at The Royal Over-seas League (just off St. James’s St.). Our guest of honour, Margaret Hodge MBE MP and Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, promises to be a thought-provoking speaker.  It’s worth remembering that we welcome individual as well as group bookings for the Annual Dinner. The dinner format and a careful seating plan ensure you will meet interesting industry peers, even if you don’t know anyone else attending before the day.

We are also holding our second (annual) Social Media breakfast event in September. This year’s theme is: “Social Media as Market Maker: does it improve corporate communications or confuse the markets?” A panel of speakers from across the industry will debate the role of social media in the world of corporate communications and especially working in a shareholder and listed environment. The panellists will include Allan Schoenberg, Director of Corporate Communications for the derivatives marketplace CME Group; Claudia Quinonez, News Market Specialist at Bloomberg; Andrew Cave, freelance journalist and author of ‘The Secrets of CEOs’; Mary Whenman, MD, Corporate, Financial & Public Affairs, Weber Shandwick and a speaker from the publisher and education group Pearson who will talk about how they use online and social media as part of their communications suite. This event will be held on Friday 20 September at 8.00am for 8.30am at Weber Shandwick’s offices in Holborn. The event will conclude by 9.45am.

Finally, our autumn programme includes, as usual, three lunchtime meetings: David Hellier, Deputy Editor of City AM on Tuesday 10 September (this meeting will be held at the offices of MHP Communications at 60 Great Portland St); Clare Harbord, Corporate Affairs Director at Heathrow on Monday 7 October, at the AXA offices, 5 Old Broad St; and James Quinn, Deputy Business Editor of The Sunday Telegraph on Tuesday 12 November, also at the AXA offices in Old Broad St.

David Hellier has been at City A.M. since 2005. He is an established financial journalist, having reported on the City and finance during a career spanning three decades. He is now deputy editor of City A.M., writing a weekly column on investment banks. His previous career has involved three spells at the Independent, seven years at the Express and Sunday Express, and earlier stints at the Evening Standard, Sunday Correspondent and the Birmingham Post.

Refunds will only be made if notice of cancellation is given not less than 48 hours beforehand.

Membership

We welcome new members so please let others in the PR world know about the CIPR Corporate and Financial Group (contact Sue Owen for details).  We continue to offer free attendance at meetings to members who are between jobs.

The Corporate and Financial Group exists to provide you with:

  • access - to leaders in business, the media, and the City, at our events
  • networking - amongst our peer group and other senior practitioners
  • guidance on best practice - particularly on matters which directly support the credibility and effectiveness of our profession in delivering value to senior decision makers in business and corporate life
  • representation - on regulatory issues or other matters affecting our collective licence to operate, acting as an authoritative voice for our profession.

Our events include our regular lunchtime meetings (usually the second Tuesday of the month), our annual summer party and annual dinner, visits to places like 10 Downing Street, the Guardian and Sky News, best practice seminars, and events for those new to the industry (Tomorrow’s Talent).
