We had a lovely summer’s evening for our annual Summer Party earlier this week – it was even sunny enough to enjoy the wonderful rooftop terrace.  It was great to see so many people and a wonderful opportunity to network in a casual manner and spend time getting to know friends and colleagues in the industry.

We are very lucky to have the support of Olswang, AXA, and especially Precise, which allows us to hold events like the summer party, speaker lunches and annual dinner.  And Ben Fitzpatrick ensures that we remember the events with his photographs – the ones from the summer party are on the website– take a look.

Prior to the summer party we held our AGM and I am delighted to say that we have a very strong committee for the next year who will continue to work hard to produce the sort of events that you want to see. Membership of the group has increased in the past year, and we now have over 600 Corporate and Financial group members.  We have added a social media breakfast seminar and an evening panel debate on topical financial services issues to our regular programme of monthly lunchtime speakers. And we are working to increase and improve our presence online and on social media channels. We remain very interested to hear our members’ views and what else you would like the CIPR Corporate and Financial Group to offer in the future.  We have set up a short survey to gather your views – please click on the link to participate in the survey, it really does only take a couple of minutes to complete. And if you would like to get more involved in the work of the group and the committee  please let me know by email.

Becoming a member of the group is the most cost effective way to attend events – for information about membership options (or to check whether you are currently a member) please contact Sue Owen.  Priority is often given to members for special events.

The next event is our lunchtime meeting with Martin Waller on 9 July and then we have our summer
break.  The autumn programme will include our usual lunchtime meetings but also two special events – our social media breakfast on 20 September and our annual dinner on 21 November.

We are delighted that Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee,
has agreed to speak at the Corporate and Financial Group annual dinner on Thursday 21 November. We look forward to hearing about the ground-breaking work that she has been doing at the Public Accounts Committee – this event is bound to be popular so book your tickets early. The dinner will be held at the Royal Over-Seas League just off St James’s St.

Don’t forget that for our September lunchtime meeting on 10 September MHP Communications have kindly agreed to host the meeting as our usual hosts are unable to do so on this occasion. The MHP offices are at 60 Great Portland Street.

Martin Waller, Tempus Editor, The Times

Martin Waller was going to be a lawyer but changed his mind. He has worked on The Times for 25 years in a number of roles for the Business section including as Deputy City Editor and as its waspish City diary editor for more than a decade.  In 2010, he became editor of the well-reputed Tempus column, in which he provides insightful analysis of corporate news and his inimitable investment advice.

Before joining The Times, Martin was a reporter at Extel for five years prior to which he trained with Thomson Regional Newspapers before becoming a reporter for Thomson Magazines.

Refunds will only be made if notice of cancellation is given not less than 48 hours beforehand.


We welcome new members so please let others in the PR world know about the CIPR Corporate and Financial Group (contact Sue Owen for details).  We continue to offer free attendance at meetings to members who are between jobs.

The Corporate and Financial Group exists to provide you with:

  • access - to leaders in business, the media, and the City, at our events
  • networking - amongst our peer group and other senior practitioners
  • guidance on best practice - particularly on matters which directly support the credibility and effectiveness of our profession in delivering value to senior decision makers in business and corporate life
  • representation - on regulatory issues or other matters affecting our collective licence to operate, acting as an authoritative voice for our profession.

Our events include our regular lunchtime meetings (usually the second Tuesday of the month), our annual summer party and annual dinner, visits to places like 10 Downing Street, the Guardian and Sky News, best practice seminars, and events for those new to the industry (Tomorrow’s Talent).  From time to time we also organise special ad hoc events- members are often given priority booking.

Money saving and CPD 

You can buy a book of vouchers for the speaker lunches and make a 10 per cent saving. You are entitled to 5 CPD points for attending the meetings too.
