The ‘M-factor’ on 5 March to mark the launch of Tom Maddock’s new media training book was well attended by CIPR Corporate and Financial Group members. Tom gave an interesting insight into 'The seven big mistakes companies still make when dealing with the media.'   The following week Simon Walker, Director General at the Institute of Directors and a member of our advisory board, was our March lunchtime speaker. He spoke about the Institute of Directors’ mission to reflect the views of UK businesses large and small through greater connectivity, building expertise and representation on key business issues. He also talked about how businesses can manage their reputations – what they say matters less than what they do, in his opinion. In particular, for the financial services industry Simon suggested that there is still work to do on moving from a short term to a more long term focus, especially in relation to remuneration issues. Photos from all the events are on our website,

Bookings can also be made for our summer party on 25 June on the roof terrace of Olswang – we are fortunate to have the venue provided by Olswang, and Precise are once again sponsoring this very popular event.

Our April lunchtime speaker will be Linda Grant, Managing Director of Metro.  Linda was appointed Managing Director
of A&N Media’s Free Division in March 2011, responsible for the highly successful Metro and its sister brands 7Days in Dubai and Dublin’s Metro Herald.

She has been influential in moving Metro to a fully multi-channel digital approach, as well as making the ‘free media’ business model work, so we expect her insights on the business end of running a media group to be highly topical.

In May our lunchtime speaker will be Simon Watkins, Acting Editor of the Financial Mail on Sunday. More details of this and all our confirmed events are available on our website, www.corporate-financial.com.

Becoming a member of the group is the most economical way of attending events – for information about membership options (or to check whether you are currently a member) please contact Sue Owen.  Priority is often given to members for special events which include visits.

Linda Grant, Managing Director, Metro

Linda was appointed Managing Director of A&N Media’s Free Division in March 2011, responsible for the highly successful Metro and its sister brands 7Days in Dubai and Dublin’s Metro Herald.

Metro is the UK’s leading urban media brand, experienced across print, mobile, web, social and events. Read by 3.6 million ‘urbanites’, Metro is the number one choice for urban based professionals aged 18-44 across 50 UK cities. In addition, Metro’s Tablet Edition recently won the 2012 Newspaper Awards ‘Best newspaper app’, beating the FT, Times and Guardian, and boasting 500,000 downloads in just over six months.

Grant has spearheaded a new focus on digital products, a ‘mobile first’ strategy born out of the original ‘mobile’ commuter newspaper product. This vision allows Metro’s audience to engage with the brand at different points throughout the day, offering busy on the move urbanites more Metro news, sport, fashion, celebrity gossip and entertainment, more often and across more platforms.

Grant joined the just launched Metro newspaper in 1999 as Head of Planning and was promoted to Marketing Director a year later. As part of the founding senior management team she was integral in building the multi award winning Metro brand and its urbanite audience understanding.

Following this, Grant moved to the national commercial division of Capital Radio Group Plc as Strategic Marketing Director, before being promoted to Managing Director. Here she focused on delivering the Group’s national revenues from airtime, sponsorship and promotions plus commercial marketing, digital development, creative, data and consumer insight.

Linda returned to DMGT in 2005 as Group Marketing Services Director for A&N Media, later taking on the broadened remit of Director of Commercial Development, tasked with driving business development and ecommerce through leveraging existing brands and audiences. Her focus lay on mobile and TV development, in addition to the successful in-house integrated marketing agency which encompassed consumer insight, planning, analytics, modelling and multi-channel creative.

Linda is a passionate member of WACL (Women in Advertising and Communication London), a Business Leader member of the Marketing Society, a Fellow of the RSA and Patron of the IPA’s Creative Pioneers Challenge. She sits on the boards of Associated Newspapers Ltd., Catchpole Communications LLC, ALD Logistics and Fortune Green Ltd.

Refunds will only be made if notice of cancellation is given not less than 48 hours beforehand.
