2014 dates for the diary

Comment from your Chairman

Our first lunchtime meeting of the year on 14 January with Alex Brummer, City Editor of the Daily Mail, was very well attended and very interesting.  Our 2014 programme is progressing and we now have most dates confirmed – please see our calendar below for events in the first half of the year.  Of particular note is the date of the summer party, which has changed to 10 June 2014 (originally the date was 24 June but we’ve changed it in recognition that many of you may be football fans who want to support England in the World Cup. England will be playing Costa Rica in the third Group game on the evening of 24 June.) I hope we’ve given enough notice of the date change for the Summer Party, whether you love or hate World Cup football.

Additional speakers will be added to the Corporate and Financial Group programme regularly, so do check our website for the latest events and to book online. If you are thinking about starting or continuing CPD in 2014, our events qualify for CIPR CPD, too.

As well as the Corporate and Financial Group’s own programme of events, this month I would like to highlight the upcoming Maggie Nally lecture, which is organised by the CIPR International Group. The Maggie Nally Memorial Lecture has become an important fixture on the annual communications calendar, attracting leading personalities from the in-house and agency world. This year Rob Flaherty, Senior Partner, CEO and President of Ketchum, has agreed to give the keynote address, "The End of Illusion".

Flaherty's address will tap his extensive global experience and offer perspective on how social technologies are accelerating the shift in power from institutions to individuals, everywhere from Beijing to Cairo and Cape Town to London. It will offer advice to companies looking to seize opportunities created by the leapfrog effect enabled by social platforms.

The lecture starts at 6pm on Thursday 27 February, and is free to attend. It will be held in the House of Commons. It is followed at 7pm by a buffet supper in the historic Cholmondeley Room and Terrace in the House of Lords. There is a link here if you would like to book.

I’m not sure if this is encouragement or a disincentive, but I’m certainly planning to be there and it would be lovely to see some of you there, too.

Visit to Sky News

We are delighted to have had such a strong response to our visit to Sky News on 6 February.  Unfortunately we could only take 8 members but hope to arrange another visit in the next few months.  Those of you who are already on the waiting list will have first refusal, but you will need to be a member of the Corporate and Financial Group as members get preference for places on visits and there is a high demand.

We welcome new members so please let others in the PR world know about the CIPR Corporate and Financial Group (contact Sue Owen for details).  We continue to offer free attendance at meetings to members who are between jobs.

The Corporate and Financial Group exists to provide you with:

  • access - to leaders in business, the media, and the City, at our events
  • networking - amongst our peer group and other senior practitioners
  • guidance on best practice - particularly on matters which directly support the credibility and effectiveness of our profession in delivering value to senior decision makers in business and corporate life
  • representation - on regulatory issues or other matters affecting our collective licence to operate, acting as an authoritative voice for our profession.

Our events include our regular lunchtime meetings (usually the second Tuesday of the month), our annual summer party and annual dinner, visits to places like 10 Downing Street, the Guardian and the BBC, best practice seminars, and events for those new to the industry (Tomorrow’s Talent).

Membership details can be found here. You can join the group either through the CIPR or directly – please contact for details.

You can find out more details of all our events on our website together with pictures from our past events. It is worth checking regularly as we often have new events confirmed, and these can become full very quickly.

You can also join our LinkedIn group (which currently has over 910 members) and follow us on Twitter: @CIPR_CFG.
